Supplements for Dental Health

FullSizeRender (9) Supplements are a great tool when trying to detoxify and enhance our immune systems. Our immune system plays a huge roll in the health of our mouths. It’s often said that the mouth is a window into our overall health. If we can keep our mouths healthy, we can positively affect our overall health.  In order to keep our mouths healthy, we need to support our immune system.

This week we spent over 24 hours of continued education at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies learning about advanced hygiene techniques such as using light, sound, and supplements to enhance our patients oral health. We have been using ligh (laser) in our office for quite some time to eradicate bacteria during cleanings. Stay tuned for another blog post to learn more about this holistic approach and how the laser works to increase your overall health!

Having your teeth cleaned in our office is a great start, but if you ever have bleeding in your tissues, we know that this is a sign of infection and you may want to consider bumping up your immune system as a tool to help. Using our tissue therapy and your customized home care routine we are creating an environment in your mouth for your immune system to heal. That being said, we need to support your immune function so you can heal as quickly and efficiently as possible. Below is a short list of supplements to ensure you have in your daily arsenal to support your immune system and keep your mouth healthy!

Coenzyme Q10

COQ10 is a compound that occurs naturally in the cells within the human body. It serves as a power generator in all the cells. Studies show that as little as 100 MG of COQ10 daily decreases the amount of bacteria under the gum tissue. Studies also show that diseased (bleeding) gum tissue contains NO COQ10. The goal is for the COQ10 to strengthen the body so it can fight off bacteria more successfully. This supplement is even more necessary if you take a Statin- as this depletes COQ10 from the body. The COQ10 will also counteract some of the muscle weakness and pain that commonly happens when taking a cholesterol lowering medication.

We recommend a form of COQ10 called Ubiquinol at 150 mg per day.

*This supplement is not recommended if you are taking Wafrarin/Cumadin

Vitamin C

30% of the population is deficient in Vitamin C. Vitamin C is one of the safest, most effective supplements you can take. Vitamin C is necessary for collagen production and connective tissue formation. It is also used to manufacture glutathione, the most powerful antioxidant in the body. Vitamin C supports immune function and will help your mouth heal from any bleeding tissues. We recommend 500 mg per day of ascorbic acid. An increased dosage can be used if you are healing from an injury or fighting an illness.

Oral Probiotics

Oral probiotics are yet another way to support the tissues in your mouth. Just like our guts, our mouths can be overrun with bad odor causing bacteria. Dental probiotics are specific to the mouth bacteria and different from the gut probiotics that you may already be taking. Probiomax DDS is a chewable probiotic designed to activate in the oral cavity for support of healthy teeth and gums. As you chew the peppermint-flavored tablet, it releases a strain of bacteria called Streptococcus salivarius—a beneficial bacterium that normally occurs in a healthy oral cavity. This bacteria then attaches to cells in the oral cavity and colonizes, positively affecting the bacterial population therein and naturally improving the health of the teeth and gums.

Remember, it is always a good idea to speak to your doctor prior to adding any new supplements to your home care routine. We carry all of these supplements in office for your convenience, at a discounted rate for our guests.
