The answer is yes! You can get Invisalign after having braces. Many people choose to do just that.

Invisalign After Braces: What You Need to Know

Assuming you are a teenager or adult who has had braces in the past, you may be a good candidate for Invisalign. Invisalign is an alternative to traditional braces that uses clear, removable aligners to straighten your teeth gradually. Because Invisalign is nearly invisible, many people choose this treatment option for its cosmetically-appealing nature.

If you’re considering switching from braces to Invisalign, we recommend you talk to your orthodontist about it. They’ll be able to give you specific advice based on your situation.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re considering making the switch from braces to Invisalign:

1. You may need a retainer. Even if your teeth are perfectly straight after having braces, there’s always a chance that they could shift back out of place. Wearing a retainer helps to prevent this from happening.

2. You might need a fewer number of aligners than someone who has never had braces. This is because your teeth are already partially aligned from wearing braces. As such, you may only need to wear Invisalign for a shorter period than someone who has never had braces.

3. You may need to wait a while before getting Invisalign. This is because your teeth need to fully recover from having braces before you can get them fitted for Invisalign aligners. Your orthodontist can tell you when your teeth are ready for the switch.

4. Your orthodontist may recommend that you wear traditional metal braces again. In severe cases of misalignment, a more comprehensive treatment than Invisalign is necessary. Fortunately, dental technology updates have decreased the time needed to wear traditional brackets and wires. Depending on the type of braces you are wearing, orthodontic treatment through braces can take anywhere from six months to 30 months.
