Do Dental Implants Last Forever?

Dental implant consultation in Boulder
With consistent brushing, flossing, and dental checkups, dental implants can have impressive longevity. However, since a dental implant consists of multiple parts, some components may need to be replaced more often than others. At Adler Advanced Dentistry, we are committed to providing beautiful, long-lasting results.

There are three major components of a dental implant: the titanium post, the abutment, and the crown or other restoration. The titanium post, which functions as the root of a missing tooth, can last a lifetime with proper oral care. However, the abutment and crown are slightly different.

The abutment, which acts as a connecting piece, can be more susceptible to deterioration than the post, depending on the material used. The crown, which is fastened onto the abutment to look like a natural tooth, is also vulnerable to wear and tear. Dental crowns tend to have an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years.

That said, if you take adequate care of your implants, it is possible for them to last for a very long time. The lifespan of your implant restorations will depend on a variety of factors, including:

  • Your oral hygiene: To make sure your implants last as long as possible, brush and floss at least twice daily and visit a dentist every 6 months.

  • The location of the implant: Implants near the back of the mouth are under more pressure while chewing than those positioned near the front. As a result, restorations in the back of the mouth may need to be replaced more often.

  • How you use your teeth: Using your teeth to open corks, bottle caps, and packaging will likely decrease the lifespan of your implant restorations.

  • The skill of the dentist placing your implant: You should always have an experienced dentist handle your implant surgery. At Adler Advanced Dentistry, our dentist uses state-of-the-art 3D technology to map out your implant placement for a quality result every time.
