3 Common Mistakes to Avoid During Your Invisalign® Treatment

Invisalign® clear braces. These removable aligners are more convenient and comfortable than traditional orthodontics, and they’re lower maintenance too.

That isn’t to say Invisalign treatment is foolproof. Here are three of the top mistakes you’ll want to avoid.

1. Forgetting to Put Your Aligners in Your Case

It’s best practice to store your aligners in your case when you aren’t wearing them. Otherwise, you run the risk of damaging or losing your trays.

As strange as it sounds, dogs love Invisalign aligners. Not only do they smell like you, but they’re probably pretty satisfying to chew on. You don’t want to replace your trays every time your furry friend gets a hold of them. Make sure to protect them with your case.

Your case can also help you keep track of your aligners when you’re in public. Like many patients, you might be tempted to set your trays on a napkin when you go out to eat. But that’s an easy way to leave them behind or get them tossed out by a server.

2. Taking Your Aligners Out Too Often

Have you ever heard someone say that Invisalign just didn’t work for them? Odds are that person probably took their aligners out too often.

Invisalign is meant to be worn for 22-24 hours a day. You should only take your trays out to eat or brush your teeth. If you’re constantly removing them for school, work, or social events, you’re going to throw off your treatment progress.

3. Brushing Your Aligners with Toothpaste

Toothpaste is abrasive and can create tiny scratches in your trays. These scratches will pick up stains and lead to discoloration.

Our dentists recommend that you brush your aligners with liquid hand soap instead. We suggest picking up an antibacterial formula — and a second toothbrush while you’re at it. You probably don’t want your regular one to taste like soap.
