Dental implants are employed in cases where a single tooth, several teeth, or an entire arch of missing teeth. Implants serve to not only stabilize the restoration that is placed on top of them, they also stimulate bone growth around the implant. When a tooth is missing the gums and bone it was attached to are not stimulated by the blood supply and activity of the tooth. The risk becomes that surrounding bone and gums may reabsorb or melt away. Additionally, the opposing tooth (tooth on the opposite jaw) may grow toward the space created by the missing tooth.

Dental implants occur in stages. Implants are surgically placed directly in the jawbone and under the gums. Approximately four to six months after the surgical placement the implant is uncovered from under the guns. An “abutment” or implant post is then connected to it and the gums are allowed additional time to heal around it. About a month later a final tooth restoration is custom-made to fit on top of the implant post. The final restoration could be a crown, bridge, or denture.
